POSITION AVAILABLE: ARTIST ASSISTANT: TANIA BRUGUERA

Opportunity: Creative Time, New York City's veteran and vanguard public arts presenter, and The Queens Museum of Art seek a full-time Artist Assistant (January 2011-January 2012) for an upcoming project with the artist Tania Bruguera.

The project will consist of a one-year artist's residency in Corona, Queens on the subject of immigration. Currently in progress, it is expected to touch upon questions of representation in art and politics, the connections between art and activism, and the usefulness of art in the public sphere.

The Artist Assistant will be based at the site of the project in Corona, Queens and will work closely with the artist and the local community of Corona. He/She will also report to Creative Time's Senior Producer on all aspects of the project's operation. The Artist Assistant will be the primary site manager for the project in Queens and will conduct an array of administrative, research, outreach, and documentary duties on a full-time basis.


Tasks and Responsibilities:

Site Management:

  • Oversee the operation of the project site in Corona (including space build-out, managing finances and paying bills, training and managing volunteers, procuring equipment and materials, etc.)
  • Liaison with the Corona Community on behalf of the project, the artist, and Creative Time

Organization/Administration:

  • Develop and manage a timeline and strategic plan with the artist, Creative Time, and The Queens Museum of Art
  • Schedule, coordinate, and produce events at the project site
  • Assist the artist with additional organizational and administrative tasks, including financial management, scheduling, filing, etc.
  • Liaison with Creative Time's Senior Producer regarding the timeline and milestones for the project

Research:

  • Conduct extensive research as needed by the artist and keep all research well organized and archived

Outreach/Correspondence:

  • Conduct professional correspondence with various institutions and individuals as needed
  • Conduct outreach and arrange meetings for the artist with various community leaders and others

Documentation:

  • Serve as the project's archivist, arranging for the documentation of meetings, events, etc.
  • Produce documentary and promotional materials for the project using basic video editing, photo and design skills
  • Contribute to the operation of the project's website


Requirements: The Artist Assistant must be fluent in spoken and written Spanish. He/She must have experience managing an office, project site, or other space with logistical challenges (including managing budgets and timelines). He/She must be a keen administrator, extremely organized, detail oriented, and have exceptional research skills. He/She must have experience with managing/updating websites and be proficient in organizing, formatting, and editing images and other media files. The Artist Assistant must have superb interpersonal and e-mail correspondence skills, and be able to work with the artist, Creative Time staff, and others in a collaborative, professional, and pleasant manner. Finally, an interest in contemporary art, the missions of Creative Time and The Queens Museum of Art, and Tania Bruguera's artistic practice is highly desirable.


Required Availability and Compensation: This is a one-year, full-time position from January 2011 to January 2012. Hours will vary week-to-week (e.g. 24 hours one week and 50 hours another week). Specific start and finish dates to be determined.

Fee for the entire year will be in the low-$20K range, with payments scheduled for every other week.
