In the spirit of a 1960's art happening, artist Doug Aitken celebrated the release of his 2006 book, Broken Screen, with an event produced by Creative Time at the Essex Street Market. The happening featured conversations with artists Jeff Koons, Vito Acconci, and Miranda July, as well as numerous music performances and film screenings.
Broken Screen is comprised of informal conversations between Aitken and a roster of twenty-five carefully chosen filmmakers, designers, architects, and artists. Part guidebook, part manifesto, Aitken’s book considers the realities of creating art in an increasingly fragmentary world. Via both casual and direct discussions, Broken Screen offers a detailed navigation through the ideas behind the previously under-documented visual language of nonlinear narratives, split screens, and fragmentary visual planes.
