June 10, 1998 -- CREATIVE TIME IN THE ANCHORAGE 98 presents a startling array of music, film and performance art this year, in the glorious chambers in the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, starting June 16th. Focusing on the increasing dialogue between music, video/film, and performance a wide array of artists will descend on the Anchorage this summer to continue the tradition of unexpected and challenging art in one of New York's most unforgettable performance spaces.

TUES, JUNE 16 -- RET.INEVITABLE 8 PM - 1 AM $12 in advance/$15 day of show

This FLMSCL (pronounced film-skul) production, curated by Francine Hermelin, Adam Levite, David Levine and Karen Cinorri, is the stunning opening event of CREATIVE TIME IN THE ANCHORAGE 98. Designed as a playground of cinema, live music, performance art and production design, RET.INEVITABLE presents a stunning array of cutting-edge filmmakers in a venue which reflects their spirit and energy. Participants in the evening include: Paul Thomas Anderson (Academy Award nominated director of Boogie Nights has created , Flagpole Special, specifically for the event), Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo), Todd Haynes + Christine Vachon (Safe, Poison), Atom Egoyan (Sweet Hereafter), Spike Jonze (commercial and music video director: Nissan, Snapple, Beastie Boys), Floria Sigismondi (videos for Marilyn Manson, David Bowie), Doug Aitken (artist/filmmaker included in 1997 Whitney Biennial), Photo/video art duo Doug & Mike Starn, Karen Cinnore (filmmaker, managing director of Drift, an experimental film distributor), John Carluccio (director: Battle Sounds, documentary included in 1997 Whitney Biennial), The X-Ecutioners (hip-hop dj's/turntablists), Karen Kimmel (installation artist), Marcus Raboy + Carolyn Chen (commercial/ music video directors), The Terceira Coalition (sound/visual artists), Michael Gondry (commercial/video director: Rolling Stones, Bjork, Levi's, Smirnoff), RES (digital film magazine and film festival), Gus Gus (Icelandic filmmakers/musicians/ designers), Jason Hernandez Rosenblatt (director/humorist "Meat")

WED. JUNE 17 -- SUSSAN DEYHIM 9 PM $10 advance/$12 day of show

Sussan Deyhim brings classical Middle Eastern musical traditions to the new millennium and presents an alluring evening of hypnotic music and visuals. DJ Muttamasik starts the evening spinning classical Egyptian and Arabic sounds. The shocking and sensual 20-minute Sahara Desert documentary "Life Without Death," directed by Frank Cole and scored by Richard Horowitz, will be projected with sound on the walls of the Anchorage and then run silently on a loop throughout the night. Deyhim will then collaborate with Iranian musician Reza Derahkshani, followed by a set with her band Majoun (Richard Horowitz, Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish), with special guest Reggie Workman and Vernon Reid. Badawi (Raz Mesenai) weaves the night together with a set of drum and bass then Graham Haynes presents a solo set. Muttamasik and Deyhim collaborate on a final set which closes the evening.


THURS. JUNE 18 -- ASYLUM2 IN THE ANCHORAGE 8 PM $8 advance/$10 day of show

Join us for this multi-space performance focused on spoken word and performance art, and beware of audience infiltration. Go!Poetry will host full night of spoken word action in one of the Anchorage chambers as part of the Asylum proceedings. Franklin Furnace presents eleven collaborations by artists for whom change is the only constant: Grisha Coleman, Deborah Edmeades, Murray Hill, The Jones Twins, Pat Oleszko, Alva Rogers with John Sherman, Alba Sanchez, Pamela Sneed, Diane Torr, Rich Whitman (aka Galinsky), Standard & Poor's Carpet Rollers' Red Carpet Service, A Standard and Poor Enterprise (VIP Red Carpet Treatment: for reservations 718-875-7535, space is limited!) FRI. JUNE 19 -- KONKRETE JUNGLE's AMERICAN BREAKBEAT CULTURE 10 PM

AMERICAN BREAKBEAT CULTURE pushes the sonic boundaries of the Anchorage's vaulted space with three decks. Featuring: M. Doughty of Soul Coughing, Jonathan Maron of The Groove Collective, U.V. Ray vs. Lloop (featuring members of Soul Coughing and We), 5th Platoon, The Guild (Sugarcuts, 4-Real, IXL, Drum One) Justin Johnson, a selection of Konkrete Jungle's finest DJs: Cassien, Wally, delMar, Datcyde; Mutamassik, Byzar, Sheldon Drake, fat cat, Siraiki and Karsh Kale from Mutiny and Basement Bhangra, and a deep mix of underground talent. WED. JUNE 24 -- NOT THE FOUR WALLS SLIDE AND FILM CLUB 7 PM $8

These local artists present their visions and tell stories in 16mm, Super 8, video and slide projection. The resident Film Club band featuring, Paul and David Scher with Brian Dewan, invent live scoring for each artist's work on request. Participants include: Mike Ballou, Christian Marclay, Kim Kimball, William Stone, Katheryn Drury, Nozomu Suwa, Bob Brain, Ken Butler, Bettina Hubby, Matt Marello, Mike Moneagle, Perry Hoberman, Meghan Cash, Doug Skinner, Fred Tomaselli, Jim Kantor, Guy Smit, Stacy Greene, Meredith Allen, Livia Hoffman, Patrick Killoran, Lisa Hein, Michael Sarff + Tim Whidden, Alison Slon, Heike Bartels, Jim Torok, Mark Newgarten, Burnie Yenelouis, Hans Winkler, Tim Main, Kim Dickey, David Wells, Bob Seng, Tim Spelios and others to be announced.

COLLUDE & INTRUDE, the unification of hip hop culture's four elements and its most progressive offshoots MCing, turntablism, breakdancing and graffiti art. This unbelievable meeting of the minds and the music is hosted by the most innovative Lord Sear and Mums The Schemer. FRI. JUNE 26 -- JOHN ZORN'S NIGHT OF RADICAL IMPROVISATIONS 9 PM
$12 advance/$15 day of show

John Zorn gathers a group of experimental musicians for an evening of radical acoustic improvisation including Mike Patton formerly of Faith No More, Min Xiao-Fen with Derek Bailey, Cyro Baptista's "Beat the Donkey," and legendary free jazz percussionist Milford Graves.


SAT. JUNE 27 -- BLACK METROPOLIS 10 PM $12 in advance/$15 day of show.

Just yesterday Coltrane, Sun Ra, Jimi Hendrix and so many other were musicians who gathered little of the attention they deserved in their own country and from their own people. Today, the creative minds of "Detroit Techno"- Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig and Juan Atkins to name a few -- stand in a similar position. They are creating music that speaks to black people but is seldom heard by them. Hopefully that will change, maybe tomorrow. . . Black Metropolis' line-up includes: Carl Craig and Juan Atkins; Che Christopher Stackhouse, Malik, Jaymz Nylon, Brett Dancer and Gamall.

ABSOLUT PANUSHKA

Creative Time in the Anchorage 98 also features ABSOLUT PANUSHKA, offering visitors the unique opportunity to create their own animated films using the site's innovative, award winning online animation software. The new films, and ones created specifically for the site, can either be viewed on the many available computers in the room, or will be projected onto the ceilings and walls of the ABSOLUT PANUSHKA chamber. Visitors will be able to surf the ABSOLUT website (www.absolutvodka.com) at the cyber-friendly area.

DIRECTIONS: The Anchorage is inside the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn, located on Cadman Plaza West at the intersection of Hicks and Old Front Streets. Take the 2/3 train to Clark Street or the A/C train to High Street. Walk down Cadman Plaza West towards the river under the BQE overpass. The entrance to the Anchorage is on the right.
