Subway Connection
Phase I: Finding the Jumpers
In order to find a good cross section of the City's residents to jump,
Doyle chose to move away from its center.
Using the subway infrastructure as a conceptual plumbing for the project, with Creative Time Doyle approached community groups at the end points of all the subway lines that stop in Columbus Circle (the A, B, C, D, 1 and 9). Then in August and September 1999, video shoots took place in each of these neighborhoods. At these shoots, four hundred and twenty New York residents and visitors were documented jumping as high as they could against a black backdrop. This footage is to be edited together, slowed down, and projected onto the building's facade.
Phase II: Subway Car Cards
Because the neighborhoods chosen for this project are linked via the
subway system, it seemed appropriate that the project be extended into
the subway as well.
Starting in March 2000, a series of four car cards designed by Doyle were
posted in the subway to make visible the subway's role in connecting Leap
participants and the City. Each card images features a dramatic close-up
of participants in mid-jump taken by extreme sports photographer,
Charlie Samuels. The texts were collected from
interviews with the jumpers. |
