Project Description
For his debut public art project in New York City, artist Nick Cave will transform Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall into a pasture for a grazing herd of thirty fantastical life-size horses. Accompanied by live music, the horses—examples of the artist’s celebrated “Soundsuits”—will be periodically brought to life by sixty dancers who will activate the space daily through choreographed and spontaneous interventions. Cave’s Soundsuits are meticulously handcrafted; they reference dress and ritual attire from around the world, responding to the globalization of cultural identity. HEARD•NY celebrates the everyday symphony of the train station, a site of perpetual motion, with an unexpected and joyful intervention into the daily activity of this historic landmark.
HEARD•NY is presented from March 25-31st, 2013, by Creative Time and MTA Arts for Transit as part of a series of events celebrating the centennial of Grand Central Terminal. When not activated, the Soundsuits will be on view in Vanderbilt Hall.
