In August 2000, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts For Transit program invited Creative Time to propose an exhibition for Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall. Creative Time invited Takashi Murakami to propose his first public art project. After several sketches and discussions, Murakami designed a whole new idea for this project.

Murakami's installation, "WINK," consists of three inflatable sculptures, and two floor sculptures. These works have been conceived and produced specifically for this exhibition, and have never been seen before. The inflatable sculptures are two giant floating "eye-balls" and a ball of daisies held up by a cartoon character named "Oval" sitting upside down.

The floor sculptures are two large discs lying flat on the ground, covered by cartoon eyes, echoing the motifs of the balloons. The eyes on each balloon and floor sculpture are distinctively different in size and expression; each look in a different direction-much like the bustle of Grand Central's commuters. Floating overhead, the balloons will cast a light-hearted, winking glance at the curious and amused commuters and at the classical beaux-arts architecture of Vanderbilt Hall.
